HonestPDF introduces Smart Whiteout in this update, automatically sampling a PDF page's background color to produce seamless whiteout corrections instead of a fixed white rectangle.

TL;DR

The whiteout tool in the Fill PDF editor now detects and matches your document's actual background color. This fixes the obvious white-box problem on cream, gray, or off-white PDFs. A Pure White fallback option is also available for cases where you want a fixed color.

What's New

  • Smart Whiteout: Samples the PDF page background color and applies a matching fill, so corrections blend in on non-white documents
  • Pure White fallback: Option to force a stark white fill when needed, regardless of the detected background
  • Border artifact fix: Removed the unwanted border/outline that was appearing around whiteout boxes
  • EditToolbar text labels: Added readable text labels to toolbar buttons for improved usability and accessibility
  • i18n updates: New translation strings and FAQ entries for Smart Whiteout shipped across all supported languages

How to Use

  3. Smart Whiteout activates automatically and samples the background color of the current page
  4. Draw your whiteout box , it will match the page background
  5. To override and use pure white, select the 'Pure White' option in the tool settings before drawing

FAQ

How does Smart Whiteout detect the background color?

It samples pixel data from the PDF page canvas to calculate the dominant background color, then uses that color as the fill for the whiteout rectangle.

Will Smart Whiteout work on scanned documents with uneven backgrounds?

It samples a representative area of the page background, so it works well on consistently colored backgrounds. Heavily textured or patterned backgrounds may still be visible , use Pure White as a fallback in those cases.

What happened to the borders around whiteout boxes?

That was a rendering artifact that has been fixed in this release. Whiteout boxes no longer display an outline or border stroke.

Is Smart Whiteout available in all languages HonestPDF supports?

Yes. Translation strings and FAQ entries for Smart Whiteout were added to all supported language files in this update.
